The Real Review
The Real Review
98 Points, Stuart Knox, The Real Review
Pale lemon yellow colour. Grapefruit, lemon zest, grilled peach, smoky matchstick and hazelnut complexities leap from the glass. Palate sings with that same enthusiasm: there’s layers upon layers, a base note of grapefruit has smoky notes and subtle nutty nuances all running across it with bright acidity and a hint of grip that ensures drive and control of the powerful intensity on show. It flows incredibly long, remaining integrated and poised right to the finish, when it eventually arrives
98 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
Very bright, light yellow colour with an engagingly complex bouquet of smoky matchstick reduction overlying grapefruit and lemon, toasted nuts and nougat, the intensity and range of complexities on the nose repeated in the mouth where the wine is stunningly intense and concentrated, flowing long and harmoniously to its incredibly long finish. A great chardonnay.

This chardonnay comes from the Wallcliffe area within Margaret River. The fruit from this season was excellent, but then Cliff Royle has harnessed it perfectly creating a wine of tremendous power, yet at the same time subtlety and elegance. Slight struck match flinty characters on the nose merge with deeper notes of lemon curd and quince with a slightly oyster shell finish. As good as anything Flametree have made.

I judge at many wine shows each year, and occasionally a wine will sweep through the shows - no matter the city, the matrix of judges and palates and the combination of wines entered. It is exciting when this happens, and it is a reminder that great wines will prevail, no matter the conditions. Here, the 2023 SRS Wallcliffe Chardonnay did very well in the Australian wine show system in 2024, and I was judging at two shows where this wine swept the results with gold medals; and it later won multiple trophies. It is better than I've ever seen it looking on release, and it seems to be a combination of perfect growing conditions of 2023 and a more restrained approach to reduction and sulfides in the wine. It has notes of curry leaf, yellow peach, salty ocean air, saltbush, pressed incense and white flowers. It is a classy wine that has been cleverly made, and it's a beautiful representation of the vintage and the region in equal measure. Despite the points - and what do they matter except to rank - I believe this is the best SRS Chardonnay that has ever been made to date. Highly recommended. Drink: 2024-2033.
