1983 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon

1996 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
The Wine Magazine puts Moss Wood Cabernet in Australia’s Top 5. The panel of Max Allen, Peter Bourne, Andrew Caillard, Peter Forrestal Huon Hooke, Lyndey Milan and Jeremy Oliver tasted the latest vintage of the country’s 32 best cabernets as part of the process of determining the Top 20. They then tasted one or more older vintages to help provide a historic context and a backdrop for the panelist’s own knowledge of the wines. They rated the Moss Wood with Cullen Cabernet Merlot, Penfolds Bin 707, Mount Mary Cabernets and Wynn’s Black Label as the best five Australian cabernets.
1997 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
The 1997 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon has attractive mulberry and redcurrant perfumes with overtones of spicy, charry oak. Its palate is smooth, round and generous, with rich, sweet fruit, mulberry, plum and mint characters and some tarry earthiness. Although having the body and structure to age, it has the fruit weight and concentration of flavour which enables its tannins to appear soft and neatly balanced. We are particularily pleased with the wine.

1998 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
18/20 Points - Jancis Robinson
"Rich, hidden nose promising all sorts of exciting things. Thick, sweet fruit when it hits the palate followed by layers of explosive interest. There is a great deal of tannin here but it is well covered by slicks of dramatic rich Cabernet fruit (the wine contains four per cent Cabernet Franc and two per cent Petit Verdot). Quite plummy. I wondered whether this was Gralyn when I tasted it blind."
2001 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2001 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is arguably the greatest wine yet released from the vineyard. It has a fragrant nose of mulberries, blackberries and violets with a touch of earth and some spicy, cedary notes while the palate is deep, densely flavoured with ripe cassis and mulberry, complexed by chocolate and coffee bean characters. This is a profound, powerful red, opulent and concentrated with impressive weight showing fine, ripe tannins on a long, lingering finish. The oak and densely packed fruit are seamlessly integrated.

2003 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
The 2003 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon was a pleasant surprise on first tasting. It was a smooth, firm wine that did not overwhelm the plate, but was beautiful balanced. In fact, I had two glasses at one go. I found myself wondering: Is this Australian? For to a certain extent, it reminded me of a French interpretation.
