The nose is shy and subtle, though notions of red apple, peppery rye crumb, stone and lemon emerge with more air. Tightly coiled, the palate suggests spicy riches with its insinuations of white pepper and tangerine peel. A lovely interplay of Pinot richness and Chardonnay slinkiness, showing depth, svelteness and elegance. It justs needs air to breathe. Gorgeous. Drink: 2020 - 2030.

The latest release of Taittinger's NV Brut Prélude Grands Crus is showing nicely, offering up aromas of pear, crisp stone fruit, warm biscuits and marzipan. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and precise, with tangy acids and fine depth at the core, this is still a little reserved after what I suspect is quite a recent disgorgement, and it will merit a little patience. Drink 2022 - 2037.

Breaking my usual rule here of not reviewing any NV that doesn’t have a batch number/disgorge date/cuvee or similar, and I believe Taittinger are opposed to including any sort of batch identification too. Shame. Well, anyway, it’s Christmas and I really like this wine, but make no guarantee that you’ll be supping the same batch. Made only from Grand Cru vineyards and held on lees for five years.
Toasty with plenty of bready complexity and powerful lemon and mixed nut flavour. Intense acidity and focus–strong and firm—then a long briny/mineral finish. Muscular but graceful. So much fizz packed into one bottle, though it’s still easy to drink. Terrific.
