2016 Xanadu 'Stevens Road' Chardonnay
97 points, James Suckling, The Wine Companion
Whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented in French barriques (25% new), no mlf, matured for 9 months. Its Reserve sibling has the complexity that this adroitly sidesteps, contesting its own ground with feline grace, every part of its body precisely shaped and weighted, leaving the palate with an airy freshness that will never tire you.
2018 Leeuwin Estate 'Art Series' Chardonnay
99+ Points - Ray Jordan, The West Weekend
Let's put it this way. This is the closest I have come to awarding a wine 100 points. Stellar wine from a stellar vintage. The remarkable thing is that this is a wine 100 percent barrel fermented in new French oak barriques with regular lees stirring for 11 months - and it certainly doesn't taste excessive, or even slightly oak. It has such high-fidelity purity with complex seductive aromatics of vanilla bean and light oatmeal with a cutting minerality and spicy lift. But the palate, oh the palate. This is where things start to explode. Power, poise and persistence with a dry savouriness balancing the intense ripe fruit. It is such a long finish with an ever so slightly, charry finish completing a remarkable wine.
2023 Cullen 'Kevin John' Chardonnay
99 Points - Ray Jordan, rayjordan.com.au
Great vintage, great wine. It’s the perfect combination. This is right up there with any previous Cullen chardonnay, and if someone argued it to be the best I wouldn’t put up much of a fight. Follows the Cullen biodynamic approach which sees the fruit harvested by hand, whole bunch basket pressed and then fermented in a mix of concrete eggs, amphorae and biodynamic puncheons. The attention to biodynamics is one of total commitment. Engaging aromas of white peach and cumquat with a gentle vanilla bean and lemon curd character. An edge of grapefruit and quince with a sliced pear character adds further complexity. The palate is an incredibly powerful expression of a stone fruit combination complemented by a sprinkle of turmeric and lemon zest. The dry savoury and slightly chalky finish completes a remarkable wine. Where does it sit in the Cullen gallery? You be the judge.
2014 Woodlands 'Matthew' Cabernet Sauvignon
97 Points & Platinum Medal - Decanter World Wine Awards 2020
Stunning cassis, floral and incense scents. The palate is youthful, structured and long; its vanilla and spicy oak is beautifully integrated, tucked in behind the veneer of polish. Fantastic potential here, along with a very long finish.
2018 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon
100 Points, Sam Kim, The Wine Orbit
Can a Cabernet be any finer, better structured and more engaging? This gloriously composed wine shows crème de cassis, spicy oak, subtle cigar, game and rich floral aromas on the nose, leading to an immensely concentrated palate offering exceptional depth and drive. Offering waves of refined texture and delicious flavours, classically structured by loads of fine tannins, finishing seductively long and gratifying. At its best: 2028 to 2058.
2021 Vasse Felix 'Tom Cullity' Cabernet Malbec
98 Points, Cassandra Charlick, Decanter
Some wines take your breath away – this is one of them. A Cabernet/Malbec blend with 68% new French oak; there’s no shortage of wood, but the fruit glimmers through like a mirage. Potpourri, plum skin, blueberry and damson are laced with sweet wood spice, dark chocolate shavings, liquorice strap, clove, briar rose florals and a compelling other-worldly spice. Bonfire smokiness compels. The intensity of perfume on the nose is matched on the palate, complete with splayed, shapely, firm tannins, a spider thread of acidity and a mouth-filling delicacy of fruit. A pinch of dried cranberry, saltbush and red peppercorn adds a nose-crinkling freshness to the finish. Just sublime.
