This is lovely. Full of mandarin juice and peel, makrut lime and the creamiest nougat lees flavour - divine. It's delicate, stylish and so appealing, the acidity bringing everything into alignment. - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion (96 pts)

Critic Reviews

96 Points - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

“An off-dry style, a portion aged on lees in old oak and the rest in stainless steel. This is lovely. Full of mandarin juice and peel, makrut lime and the creamiest nougat lees flavour - divine. It's delicate, stylish and so appealing. Most importantly, the acidity brings everything in alignment, so the sweetness just fleshes out and rounds out the palate. Closure: Screw cap. 12% alcohol. (Drink by 2035)”

93 Points - Angus Hughson, Vinous

“The off-dry 2023 Riesling SmithCullam shows impressive restraint as it builds layers of melon and pear aromas with nice touches of marmalade and dried flowers. A good overall balance with zesty acidity is the key here, with pear and floral flavors building through to a long and vibrant finish. (Drink between 2025-2036)”

93 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review

92 Points - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

“The 2023 Smith Cullam Riesling leads with wet paperbark tree, juniper berries, green apple skins, white currant and brine, with a hint of reed, straw and even lemongrass on the nose. Citrus peel and white flowers populate the palate; it doesn't have the plump, pillowy sort of texture that I have found in some other vintages. This has a tension and tanginess to the acidity that makes it a little more racy than earlier iterations. It's leaving a pop-rock candy sensation on my tongue after it's gone. This is exciting, make no mistake, and has great length of flavor, yet it is quite a distinct and perhaps a touch dilute (?) wine this year. 12% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”
