Puligny-Montrachet is the reference point for fine white Burgundy, and Monnier's village wine shows why. It comes from a single plot on marl and brown limestone and is given an extended, cool fermentation that favours line over weight. Where Meursault leans plush, Puligny is about cut and precision, a tighter, more mineral frame that carries fine length. One to drink now or hold a few years.
Domaine Jean Monnier (Meursault) One of Burgundy's oldest family estates, working the Côte de Beaune since 1720, now in its sixteenth generation under Nicolas Monnier. Unusually makes near-equal white and red across Meursault, Puligny, Pommard, Volnay and Beaune; generous, classically built wines.
“Lemons, cedar, cloves and sweet white peaches on the nose of this elegant and flavorful white. It's full-bodied with classy oak influence and a bright, firm finish. Drink now or hold.”
