Pierro and the VR Chardonnay
"Since the mid 1980s Mike Peterkin has crafted a chardonnay of not only monumental power, but of simultaneously smooth and silky delivery. Pierro Chardonnay is the role model for so many of Australia's more opulent and hedonistically proportioned chardonnays and is a stunning expression of Margaret River chardonnay."
Jeremy Oliver
Mike Peterkin established the Pierro Vineyard in Willyabrup in 1980. This small family winery has crafted some of Margaret River's most exciting and stylish wines in the subsequent 43 years. Their Chardonnay is simply monumental and is one of Australia's iconic wines. The Vintage Reserve (VR) Chardonnay is made only in exceptional vintages and is a selection of the best 10 barrels that Pierro produces. 100% of the VR is from gin-gin clone chardonnay.
95 Points - Halliday Wine Companion
Light straw-green; while still retaining the Pierro stamp of elegance, it has an appreciable increase in drive and fruit depth; the oak, too, has kept pace with the increase in the complexity of the fruit profile.
93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Savoury and briny, almost into a faint chicken stock thing, Meyer lemon and melon, spice and cedar. It’s again falling into savoury with a pleasing gloss to the texture, and a minor amount of flinty abrasion. Good finish, distinctly nutty and saline. Slightly lacking vivacity, as a quibble. It’s a wine that’s confident in its stage of maturity, and drinks very well now, though likely to hold. Drink 2019-2022+
