Average Critic Score: 94.75/100

Around 1.7 hectares in Charmes-Dessus, the upper and better-regarded half of Meursault's largest premier cru, bordered by Perrieres and Puligny-Combottes. Christy Canterbury MW notes that over half the fruit comes from centenary vines, the rest from thirty-year-olds, on the ample clay that gives the wine its concentration. Charmes is the warm, round, generous member of Meursault's prestige trio, and Lafon's is one of its benchmarks.

Lafon's 2023 Meursault Charmes is an instant classic, with aromas of ripe apple and hazelnut accented with a bit of smoky reduction and buttery depth. The texture is rich yet lively, and the wine lingers persistently on the palate. - Charles Curtis MW, Decanter (95 pts)

Whole-cluster pressed and raised in cask, a quarter of it new, across two winters. William Kelley, Christy Canterbury MW and Sarah Marsh MW all scored it 95, and Matthew Hayes rated it 17.5+/20. Canterbury named the domaine one of her top ten Cote de Beaune white wine producers of 2023.

Critic Reviews

95 Points - Charles Curtis MW, Decanter

“Lafon's 2023 Meursault Charmes is an instant classic, with aromas of ripe apple and hazelnut accented with a bit of smoky reduction and buttery depth. The texture is rich yet lively, and the wine lingers persistently on the palate. It is produced from very old vines from 60-95 years old that are located at the southern end of Charmes Dessus, bordered by Perrieres and Puligny-Combottes. The youngest vines are declassified, and the grapes are pressed as whole clusters before fermenting and ageing in cask (25% new) over two winters. Reviewed May 2024. Drink 2030-2050.”

95 Points - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

“Aromas of pear and orange oil mingled with hints of honeycomb and freshly baked bread introduce the 2023 Meursault 1er Cru Charmes, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless wine that's deep and layered, with a cool, impeccably balanced profile and a long, saline finish. Reviewed Jan 2025. (93-95 pts)”

95 Points - Christy Canterbury MW, TimAtkin.com

“Over half of this fruit is from centenary vines with the rest from 30-year-olds. There is ample clay here, giving the concentrated body real oomph, despite being primarily from the Dessus, or upper part, of the cru. Seamlessly balanced between the chiseled acidity and a crisply drying finish, this needs time to give its all in bottle. Burgundy 2023 Special Report.”

94 Points - Allen Meadows, Burghound.com

“Sweet Spot Outstanding. This possesses the most floral nose in the entire range in 2023, with its equally elegant nose of the essence of pear, crushed anise and lemon confit. Here too the mouthfeel of the exceptionally rich flavors is generous and opulent to the point of being highly seductive though, and much like the Perrieres, they don't lose their precision on the strikingly long finale that isn't quite tightly wound. Even so, this should also reward extended cellaring. Reviewed Jun 2025. Drink 2033+. (92-94 pts)”
