Since the 1971 vintage, Vat 47 has been awarded 30 trophies and 241 medals.

"These days Vat 47 is handpicked into two bins at a time, with workers stationed around the bins as the grapes arrive, removing leaf and cane fragments and any grapes affected with botrytis or mildew. A key decision has been the reintroduction of basket pressing, which reduces the yield of juice per tonne."- Halliday Wine Companion

Critic Reviews

96 Points - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

“This 2013 Vat 47 Chardonnay is still green in the glass; I recall looking at this wine in a masked tasting at the end of 2022, and I thought it was a lot younger than its 10 years. Aromatically, there is white peach, green apple, shaved fennel, brine and pink grapefruit. In the mouth, the wine is complex and layered, powerful and driven. It's really good. It's still quite raw-feeling currently; it's almost as if it needs more time! This is a super vintage. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”

96 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review

“Biscuity oak, seems like a different kind of oak. Very good flavour depth and richness allied with subtley and refinement, then a long, long carry. Very smart wine.”

96 Points - Daniel Honan, Decanter

“A dry spring until late January, and a gust or so of wind, made for good picking conditions under blue skies abundant with silvery-white clouds. Coiled yet tranquil, for now, the 2013 is beginning to stir. A nose of flint, pear skin and flesh leads into a bracing, flavoursome palate of melon, lemon curd and white peach. Waxy acids provide a fine line and length, indicating that time is on our side.”

95 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion

“Tyrrell's made its first Vat 47 in '71 and soon embraced barrel fermentation in French oak, to all intents and purposes the leader of the pack, playing the same role that Max Lake had played with cabernet in '65-'66, so it's hardly surprising Tyrrell's is a skilled practitioner. Still a vibrant youthful straw-green; white peach and nectarine drive the engine on this lovely chardonnay; barrel ferment oak inputs and slinky acidity adding to the texture. Many of its gold medals and trophies were collected in '16, reflecting the overall complexity and balance of the wine.”
