Since the 1971 vintage, Vat 47 has been awarded 30 trophies and 241 medals.

"These days Vat 47 is handpicked into two bins at a time, with workers stationed around the bins as the grapes arrive, removing leaf and cane fragments and any grapes affected with botrytis or mildew. A key decision has been the reintroduction of basket pressing, which reduces the yield of juice per tonne."- Halliday Wine Companion

Critic Reviews

96 Points - Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate

“The 2009s so far have been creamy, plush and plump—yet not overweight or fat. So here, the 2009 Vat 47 Chardonnay speaks of creamed nuts and sea salt, white peach and pink grapefruit. The Vat 47 bottles on the table here today have all been matured in the same coopered oak—Tyrrell's has a long relationship with Francois Freres, and Andrew Spinaze has worked with them to develop a barrel and toast specific to Tyrrell's, which is featured here. This is a gorgeous wine here. It has decades to go. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”

96 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review

“This has complexity and richness as well as finesse and charm. A trace of rubber from reisdual sulfides, not an issue. Lovely balance and drinkability. A peak vintage for this wine.”

95 Points - Daniel Honan, Decanter

“Following a rain-soaked horror show in 2008, Bacchus beamed down from on high upon the tri-coloured soils of Short Flat. The 2009 is right in the zone and gorgeously poised, balancing the finesse and freshness of youth with the elegance and grace of maturity. Golden, clean and clear, its aromas gently unfurl to reveal melon, nectarine, fig and a light lashing of oak. Peach, lemon and grapefruit flavours appear on the fresh, linear, yet yielding palate.”

94 Points - Wine Companion

“Even though Murray Tyrrell privately regarded semillon as a far superior grape to chardonnay, he would have to admit Vat 47 has always been a role model, keeping one step ahead of the field. This is a supremely elegant wine in a Chablis-esque mould, and with time to go yet.”
