Since the 1971 vintage, Vat 47 has been awarded 30 trophies and 241 medals.

"These days Vat 47 is handpicked into two bins at a time, with workers stationed around the bins as the grapes arrive, removing leaf and cane fragments and any grapes affected with botrytis or mildew. A key decision has been the reintroduction of basket pressing, which reduces the yield of juice per tonne."- Halliday Wine Companion

Critic Reviews

95 Points - Jeremy Oliver, Oliver's Wines

“Hand-picked 5 Feb; fermentation initiated in stainless steel, then transferred to French barriques (30% new) and matured on lees until Aug. The brilliant straw-green colour introduces a wine that traces its lineage back to '71, the skill involved oozing from every pore and facet, not the least the tangy citrus/grapefruit farewell. 93+”

95 Points - Daniel Honan, Decanter

“A turn up for the books. While the rest of Australia soaked in unrelenting rains, the Hunter Valley was fine and warm for most of the summer; at times, perhaps, a bit too warm - not that it shows in the 2011. Polished lemon hues and a nuanced nose of jasmine and austere tropical fruits are followed by a palate of great balance, with bright, bony acidity layered beneath a luscious, fleshy mouthfeel. Lovely.”

93 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front

“You have to marvel at how such good Chardonnay can come out of the Hunter Valley. Spicy, lime and cashew nut, white melon, subtle herbal notes. Medium bodied, nuts, spice, lime and melon, flinty, tight and fairly long, though it’s a little rugged on its spicy finish. Tasty. Fine boned style that needs a couple more years in bottle to show its best.”
