Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy
Domaine Humbert Frères
Since 1989
Domaine Humbert Frères is a small, seven-hectare estate in Gevrey-Chambertin run by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the celebrated Dugat family with whom they share several old parcels through inheritance. They work only Pinot Noir, much of it from vines forty to fifty years and older, and farm with care, green-harvesting to keep yields low and picking among the earliest in the village. In the cellar the approach is traditional and unshowy: gentle extraction, restraint, and ageing in Burgundy oak, rising to all-new barrels for the grand cru. The wines are deep, structured and built to reward the cellar, and they have a devoted following among those who know them.

2023 Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles Saint Jacques
Indent price: $295.00 per bottle
Estournelles Saint-Jacques is a tiny premier cru on the upper slope at the entrance to the Combe de Lavaux, just above Lavaux Saint-Jacques and beside the famous Clos Saint-Jacques. Its white marl soils echo those of Chambertin, and the cool air drawn through the combe lengthens ripening. This is the finer, more perfumed foil to the firmer Poissenot. Humbert often makes only a single barrel, so very little reaches Australia.

“A more subtle though by no means invisible application of wood is present on the spicy and floral-suffused nose of red and dark cherry spiked with plenty of earth character. There is both good punch and richness to the relatively fine, though not dense, middle weight flavors that flash evident minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and mildly warm finale that could use better depth. (Drink starting 2028) Original score: 89-91 points”
2023 Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Poissenot
Indent price: $245.00 per bottle
Poissenot lies at the top of the slope where the Combe de Lavaux meets the village, fully south-facing yet the coolest premier cru in Gevrey. Barely twenty centimetres of soil sit over active limestone, which gives the wine its salinity and mineral cut. Humbert calls it the jewel of the estate. Raised in around half new oak, it is tightly wound and serious, a wine to lay down rather than open young.

“Moderate wood frames fresh if decidedly ripe aromas of red raspberry, wild dark currant, plum and a whiff of the sauvage. The sleek and succulent middle weight flavors possess good if not special density while displaying reasonable depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. This compact, powerful and serious effort will need at least some keeping before it's ready for prime time. (Drink starting 2033)”
2023 Humbert Freres Charmes-Chambertin
Indent price: $448.00 per bottle
Charmes-Chambertin is the domaine's grand cru and the summit of its range, from a small old-vine parcel in the Mazoyeres sector replanted around 1960. Of Gevrey's nine grand crus this is the most openly charming, while the Mazoyeres ground lends density and grip beneath the perfume. Raised entirely in new oak and bottled without fining or filtration, it is the longest-lived wine in this release and the one to bury deepest in the cellar.
92 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “Generous wood stops short of dominating the ripe and fresh nose of poached plum, dark pinot fruit, anise and warm...”
“Generous wood stops short of dominating the ripe and fresh nose of poached plum, dark pinot fruit, anise and warm earth. There is both better volume and richness to the solidly powerful broad-shouldered flavors that possess slightly better mid-palate density before terminating in a balanced bitter pit fruit-inflected finale. A few years of cellaring should help to add depth. (Drink starting 2030) Original score: 90-92 points”
2023 Humbert Freres Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes
Indent price: $158.00 per bottle
Old vines are the strength of this house, and the village Gevrey draws on parcels of them around the foot of the Combe de Lavaux, including a good share of Les Marchais. Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village of the Cote de Nuits and home to nine grand crus, more than anywhere in Burgundy. Expect depth and firmness here, dark-fruited and concentrated, with powdery tannin and fresh acidity. Village by rank, more than that in the glass.
2023 Humbert Freres Fixin Vieilles Vignes
Indent price: $113.00 per bottle
Fixin sits at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, an honest, under-the-radar village that rewards a closer look. Humbert farms old vines here and works gently in the cellar to keep the tannins supple. The style is gutsier and more earthbound than its Gevrey neighbours: blackcurrant and cherry stone, violet, pepper and a savoury, almost wild edge. Plenty of character, and one of the better-value wines in the cellar.
2023 Humbert Freres Bourgogne Cote d'Or Rouge
Indent price: $72.00 per bottle
Domaine Humbert Freres is a small Gevrey-Chambertin estate run by brothers Frederic and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family with whom they share several old parcels. This is their starting point, drawn from vines in Gevrey and neighbouring Brochon under the Cote d'Or denomination, which holds growers to tighter standards than straight Bourgogne. Sweet red-berry fruit, medium weight and supple, it carries a thread of the seriousness found further up the range. Effectively a baby Gevrey.
