Estournelles Saint-Jacques is a tiny premier cru on the upper slope at the entrance to the Combe de Lavaux, just above Lavaux Saint-Jacques and beside the famous Clos Saint-Jacques. Its white marl soils echo those of Chambertin, and the cool air drawn through the combe lengthens ripening. This is the finer, more perfumed foil to the firmer Poissenot. Humbert often makes only a single barrel, so very little reaches Australia.
Domaine Humbert Frères (Gevrey-Chambertin)
A tiny seven-hectare Pinot Noir estate run by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family. Old vines, low yields and a traditional, unshowy cellar make deep, structured wines built for the cellar.

“A more subtle though by no means invisible application of wood is present on the spicy and floral-suffused nose of red and dark cherry spiked with plenty of earth character. There is both good punch and richness to the relatively fine, though not dense, middle weight flavors that flash evident minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and mildly warm finale that could use better depth.
