Old vines are the strength of this house, and the village Gevrey draws on parcels of them around the foot of the Combe de Lavaux, including a good share of Les Marchais. Gevrey-Chambertin is the largest village of the Cote de Nuits and home to nine grand crus, more than anywhere in Burgundy. Expect depth and firmness here, dark-fruited and concentrated, with powdery tannin and fresh acidity. Village by rank, more than that in the glass.
Domaine Humbert Frères (Gevrey-Chambertin) A tiny seven-hectare Pinot Noir estate run by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family. Old vines, low yields and a traditional, unshowy cellar make deep, structured wines built for the cellar.
