Poissenot lies at the top of the slope where the Combe de Lavaux meets the village, fully south-facing yet the coolest premier cru in Gevrey. Barely twenty centimetres of soil sit over active limestone, which gives the wine its salinity and mineral cut. Humbert calls it the jewel of the estate. Raised in around half new oak, it is tightly wound and serious, a wine to lay down rather than open young.

A tiny seven-hectare Pinot Noir estate run by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family. Old vines, low yields and a traditional, unshowy cellar make deep, structured wines built for the cellar.

“Moderate wood frames fresh if decidedly ripe aromas of red raspberry, wild dark currant, plum and a whiff of the sauvage. The sleek and succulent middle weight flavors possess good if not special density while displaying reasonable depth and persistence on the youthfully austere finale. This compact, powerful and serious effort will need at least some keeping before it's ready for prime time. (Drink starting 2033)”
