Fixin sits at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, an honest, under-the-radar village that rewards a closer look. Humbert farms old vines here and works gently in the cellar to keep the tannins supple. The style is gutsier and more earthbound than its Gevrey neighbours: blackcurrant and cherry stone, violet, pepper and a savoury, almost wild edge. Plenty of character, and one of the better-value wines in the cellar.
Domaine Humbert Frères (Gevrey-Chambertin) A tiny seven-hectare Pinot Noir estate run by brothers Frédéric and Emmanuel Humbert, cousins of the Dugat family. Old vines, low yields and a traditional, unshowy cellar make deep, structured wines built for the cellar.
