Domaine Patrice et Maxime Rion

Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy

Domaine Patrice et Maxime Rion

Since 1990

Patrice Rion founded this domaine in 1990, branching out from the wider Rion family estate, and built a new winery at Premeaux-Prissey. His son Maxime now leads it, and is the driving force behind a cellar of precise, finely perfumed reds. The holdings are concentrated in Nuits-Saint-Georges and Chambolle-Musigny across six or so hectares, farmed organically and including a clutch of monopoles. Chief among them is Clos Saint Marc, the smallest monopole appellation in Nuits at under a hectare, planted on fossil-rich limestone. The wines are made with a measured touch of whole bunches and careful oak, and range from a rare white Nuits to silky, fragrant Chambolle. A serious, family-run address on a quiet but rising trajectory.

Domaine Patrice et Maxime Rion

Patrice Rion struck out on his own in 1990, leaving the wider family estate to start fresh at Premeaux-Prissey, just south of Nuits-Saint-Georges. Today his son Maxime runs the show, and the wines have a real sense of someone with something to prove: precise, perfumed and quietly serious.

It is a small domaine, only six or so hectares, but the holdings are special. They are concentrated in Nuits and Chambolle-Musigny and include a handful of monopoles, chief among them Clos Saint Marc, the smallest monopole appellation in all of Nuits at under a hectare, planted on fossil-rich limestone. Maxime farms carefully, leans on a measured touch of whole bunches and just enough oak to frame the fruit, never bury it.

The wines on offer run from old-vine Nuits and Chambolle to a trio of Nuits premier crus and a little Vosne-Romanée. Silky, fragrant Côte de Nuits from a family address on a quiet but rising trajectory, worth catching before the word is fully out.

2022 Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes

Pinot Noir · Chambolle-Musigny · Burgundy

Indent price: $177.00 per bottle

Chambolle-Musigny makes the most perfumed, lace-like reds of the Cote de Nuits, and this comes from sixty-year-old vines. It is the silkiest wine of Rion's range: red berries and violets, a fine-grained, almost weightless texture, and a long, fragrant close. Charm and finesse over power. Lovely now and through the early 2030s.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes comes entirely from bought fruit (60-year-old vines) picked from September 2nd. It has a tight-wound...”

93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy “A rich purple colour. The bouquet has the attractive sumptuous qualities of fully ripe fruit picked before it starts to...”

91 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “Here too there is just enough wood to merit mentioning on the ripe if decidedly cool aromas of red and...”

2022 Vosne Romanee

Pinot Noir · Vosne-Romanee · Burgundy

Indent price: $177.00 per bottle

Vosne-Romanee is the most celebrated red village in Burgundy, and Rion's is a blend of three well-placed plots. It shows the appellation's signature perfume: spiced red and black cherry, a floral lift and fine, silky tannins, all elegance and length. A village wine with genuine Vosne breeding. Drinking from 2026.

94 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy “A blend of Croix Blanches, Ravioles and Haut Beaux Monts, in roughly equal proportions. Racked earlier this week. A fabulous...”

91 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction and it's enough to mask everything except a touch of...”

91 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Vosne-Romanee Village includes around 40% whole bunches and delivers crisp black fruit laced with graphite and green bell...”

2022 Nuits 1er Cru Clos Saint Marc Monopole

Pinot Noir · Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos Saint Marc Premier Cru · Burgundy

Indent price: $236.00 per bottle

Clos Saint Marc is the jewel of the domaine, the smallest monopole appellation in Nuits-Saint-Georges at under a hectare, enclosed within Clos des Argillieres on limestone full of fossil oyster shells. From sixty-year-old vines and tiny in production, it is richer and plumper than its neighbour, with a deep red-fruited core and a distinct saline, oyster-shell mineral signature. A collector's premier cru. Cellar from 2028.

97 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy “A powerful bright purple. The bouquet shows a refinement ahead of all the other premiers crus chez Rion, plus a...”

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos St. Marc 1er Cru was picked around September 4th. It has a more backward yet...”

2022 Nuits Saint Georges Vieilles Vignes

Pinot Noir · Nuits-Saint-Georges · Burgundy

Indent price: $114.00 per bottle

This village Nuits is drawn from old vines on the Longecourts and plateau plots, and it carries the firm, savoury character the appellation is known for. Dark cherry and a touch of spice and earth, structured but ripe, with the depth that old vines bring. A satisfying, classically built Nuits to enjoy over the coming years.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Vieilles Vignes comes from the plateau (one-third) and the rest from the lieu-dit of Longecourts. This...”

93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy “A blend of purchased fruit from Les Longecourts, and one third their own Plateaux vineyard. All destemmed. Deep crimson purple....”

91 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “A fresh and distinctly earthy mix is comprised by notes of poached plum, black raspberry and forest floor. The delicious...”

2022 Nuits 1er Cru Clos des Argillieres

Pinot Noir · Nuits-Saint-Georges Clos des Argillieres Premier Cru · Burgundy

Indent price: $196.00 per bottle

Clos des Argillieres lies in Premeaux on lighter, sandier soils, and it gives one of the more elegant, approachable faces of Nuits. Expect fresh red cherry and strawberry, a fine mineral lift and silky tannins, all framed by Rion's careful, lightly whole-bunch hand. A premier cru with charm rather than muscle. Lovely from 2026.

94 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “Moderate reduction masks everything but traces of wood and spice. More interesting are the vibrant and super-fresh medium-bodied flavors that...”

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Argillieres 1er Cru is strict on the nose at first, buttoned-up black fruit, the...”

2022 Nuits 1er Cru Terres Blanches

Chardonnay · Nuits-Saint-Georges Terres Blanches Premier Cru · Burgundy

Indent price: $138.00 per bottle

Patrice Rion set up on his own in 1990, and his son Maxime now leads the domaine from Premeaux-Prissey. Terres Blanches is one of their rarest wines, a white Nuits-Saint-Georges, a wine almost no one makes. Chardonnay-led from a single premier cru parcel, it is firm and stony with white orchard fruit and a saline cut, more structured than charming. A curiosity for the cellar and a talking point at the table.

93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy “80 chardonnay%, 20 pinot blanc%. Fresh mid lemon. There is some density evident on the nose, suggestive of a little...”

92 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound “A deft application of wood sets off spicier aromas of ripe apple, pear, white flower and more evident citrus influence....”

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous “The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Terres Blanches, a blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Blanc that are vinified separately....”
