Orlando Abrigo

Since 1949

The Abrigo family has grown grapes at Treiso, a few kilometres from Alba, since 1949, bottling their first Barbaresco in the early 1970s. Giovanni Abrigo modernised the cellar and now leads the estate across some twenty-one hectares. Their best vineyards, Meruzzano and Montersino, sit among the highest and coolest sites in the Barbaresco zone, steep and south-facing on limestone-rich soil, each picked by hand and vinified separately. The wines are perfumed, finely structured Nebbiolo with the elevation lending freshness and lift. A classic, family-run Barbaresco address making wines of charm and pedigree.

Orlando Abrigo

The Abrigo family has been on the land at Treiso, just a few kilometres from Alba, since 1949, and bottled their first Barbaresco in the early 1970s. Three generations on, Giovanni Abrigo runs the show across some twenty-one hectares, and has gently brought the cellar up to date without losing the family's classic hand.

Their treasures are two vineyards, Meruzzano and Montersino, which sit among the highest and coolest sites in all of Barbaresco. Steep, south-facing, on limestone-rich soil, picked by hand and kept separate in the cellar. That altitude is the secret: it slows ripening and locks in freshness, giving Nebbiolo that lifts and perfumes rather than weighs.

The result is Barbaresco of real charm and pedigree, fragrant, finely drawn, ageworthy, from a family who have quietly been doing this very well for a very long time.

2020 Montersino Barbaresco DOCG

Nebbiolo · Barbaresco Montersino DOCG · Piedmont

Indent price: $108.00 per bottle

The Abrigo family has grown Nebbiolo at Treiso since 1949, on some of the highest, coolest sites in Barbaresco. Montersino is one of their crus, south-facing on limestone-rich soil, hand-picked and aged around fifteen months in barrel. The 2020 vintage favoured Barbaresco with a drier harvest, and it shows: perfumed rose and red cherry, fine silky tannins and an approachable charm that still has the frame to age. A small-production, classic Barbaresco.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate “A little more advanced and immediate in character, the Orlando Abrigo 2020 Barbaresco Montersino is an open-knit expression of Nebbiolo...”

91 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast “This vineyard comes from a sweet spot in Barbaresco that's showing its stuff the moment the cork is pulled. Fresh...”
