Why we follow Bruno Giacosa

The estate

Founded in 1871. Bruno Giacosa was the third generation and joined the family cellar at thirteen, making the first wine under his own label in 1961. He built his reputation as a négociant with an extraordinary palate, buying fruit from the best growers, and in 1964 bottled what is generally credited as one of the first single-vineyard Barbarescos, Santo Stefano, from Italo Stupino's fruit at Castello di Neive. His daughter Bruna leads the estate today.

The vineyards

He bought his first vineyard late, in 1982: Falletto in Serralunga d'Alba, the source of his greatest Barolos. Parcels in Asili and Rabajà in Barbaresco followed in 1996. The estate today is around 20 hectares owned, producing about 400,000 bottles a year across the range. From the 2012 vintage the estate stopped bottling Barbaresco Santo Stefano, having moved to an estate-fruit-only strategy for the top wines.

In the glass

Described by the house as updated traditional: long maceration, extended ageing, and no interest in the modernist barrique argument. The red label denotes a Riserva, the white label the standard bottling — a distinction collectors follow closely. The 2000 Barolo Le Rocche del Falletto took 100 points from James Suckling on release. Asked in 2017 for her favourite recent vintages, Bruna named 2011, 2014 and 2016, with 2014 an interesting inclusion given that vintage's mixed reputation.
