Why we follow Château Cheval Blanc
The estate
In the Graves-influenced northwest corner of St-Émilion, on the Pomerol border. Owned by LVMH and the Frère family, directed by Pierre Lurton with Pierre-Olivier Clouet as technical director. Like Ausone, withdrew from the 2022 classification (July 2021); its letter criticised an "evaluation system" it felt had lost sight of identity, typicity and ageing capacity, noting terroir and viticulture amounted to only 15% of the grade.
The vineyards
About 39 hectares, unusually planted to a majority of Cabernet Franc (roughly 55–60%) alongside Merlot with a little Cabernet Sauvignon. Gravel-over-clay and sand on the Pomerol boundary.
In the glass
Striking Christian de Portzamparc cellar completed 2011, with bespoke parcel-by-parcel concrete vats. Strong move toward organic and agroecological practice with extensive cover-cropping. The 1947 Cheval Blanc is one of the most celebrated Bordeaux of the 20th century. Its high Cabernet Franc proportion is highly unusual for a great Right Bank wine and is its signature.

How allocations are offered
It records which producers and wines interest you, so we know who to contact when a release is confirmed.
Availability depends on what arrives and how many customers are waiting. In some years there is very little to go round.
Our team considers purchase history, genuine interest and intended enjoyment. We would rather a case went to someone who will open it and tell us what they thought than to whoever asked first.
Change what you follow at any time from My allocation requests. Release timing moves with the producer and the vintage, so the months on the release calendar are a guide rather than a promise.
