Why we follow Château Le Pin
The estate
The archetypal garagiste — a micro-estate that rose to rival Pétrus in a single generation. Bought in 1979 by the Belgian Thienpont family, of the family behind Vieux Château Certan, with the first vintage in 1979. Jacques Thienpont still runs it, and Dany Rolland has advised on the winemaking.
The vineyards
Around 2.7 hectares, grown incrementally from roughly one hectare through small adjacent purchases in the 1980s and 2000s, on the Pomerol plateau near Catusseau. Essentially one hundred per cent Merlot on gravel, clay and sand with iron-rich crasse de fer.
In the glass
Hand-harvested, fermented in small stainless vats and aged in effectively all new oak for 14 to 18 months in a modern winery completed in 2011. Early vintages were made in a shed with minimal equipment, the origin of the garage wine tag. The name comes from a single pine tree by the property. One 1980s expansion took in land previously used as a vegetable garden. Robert Parker's perfect scores for 1982, 2009 and 2010 drove its cult status, and it occasionally trades above Pétrus.
