Why we follow Château Palmer

The estate

A Third Growth of 1855 that trades at super-second and first-growth level, in Margaux. Owned since 1938 by a partnership now centred on the Sichel and Mähler-Besse families. Thomas Duroux has been Managing Director since 2004, having previously been winemaker at Ornellaia; Sabrina Pernet was named technical director in 2007.

The vineyards

Around 55 hectares in Margaux, with an unusually high proportion of Merlot: roughly 47 per cent Merlot, 47 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon and 6 per cent Petit Verdot, with old-vine Merlot central to Palmer's velvet texture. Duroux's soil study, begun in 2006, identified 18 distinct terroirs.

In the glass

Palmer is the standard-bearer for biodynamics among the Bordeaux classed growths. Conversion began after 2008, with trials from 2009 and 2011; the entire estate was farmed biodynamically from the 2014 vintage, and it has been Demeter and organic certified since the 2018 vintage. It integrates livestock, meadows and cover crops, and has experimented with reduced and zero added sulphur. Duroux has said the specifications he was given on his first day at Palmer never mentioned yield. The estate's nineteenth-century blend nods to the historic practice of blending Rhône Syrah into Bordeaux.
