Why we follow Château Pétrus

The estate

The most famous estate of Pomerol, which has no formal classification. Owned by the Moueix family (Jean-François Moueix and children), with a ~20% stake sold to Alejandro Santo Domingo in 2018. Jean Moueix now leads Pétrus and the Duclot group. Olivier Berrouet has been winemaker and technical director since 2008, succeeding his father Jean-Claude Berrouet, who made 44 consecutive vintages from 1964 to 2007.

The vineyards

11.4 hectares on the highest point of the Pomerol plateau, around 40 metres elevation, across 12 parcels. One hundred per cent Merlot since the end of 2010, when the small Cabernet Franc holding was uprooted. The defining terroir is the roughly 40-million-year-old blue smectite clay subsoil, unique among Pomerol estates, beneath 60 to 80 centimetres of dark topsoil.

In the glass

Hand-harvest with a large picking team to bring the crop in fast; fermentation historically in concrete vats, renovated in 2005; 12 to 16 months in oak. There is no second wine. In poor years — 1956, 1965, 1991 — no wine was bottled. Madame Loubat, sole owner by the mid-1940s, appointed Jean-Pierre Moueix as exclusive agent in 1945, the decision that made Pétrus. One wine, one grape, the antithesis of the Médoc first-growth model.
