Why we follow Domaine Benjamin Leroux

The estate

Benjamin Leroux was born in Beaune in 1975, not into a wine family. He began oenology studies as a teenager and was appointed winemaker at Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard at twenty-four, where he stayed for around fifteen years while quietly building his own label. He has worked vintages at Cos d'Estournel, Drouhin Oregon and Jadot. He set up on his own account in 2007. The business is a hybrid: around eight hectares owned, plus a further thirty or so farmed under long-term arrangement. Crucially, he buys only grapes, never juice or wine, from growers whose vineyards he and his team work as though they were his own.

The vineyards

Deliberately wide. Up to fifty different wines in a year, spanning the Côte from Chassagne-Montrachet to Gevrey-Chambertin and running from regional Bourgogne to grand cru. The estate vines were certified organic in 2016, biodynamic preparations are used, and every site is ploughed.

In the glass

Whites are whole-bunch pressed, fermented on ambient yeast, and aged twelve to eighteen months in a mix of tank, barrel with no more than thirty per cent new oak, foudre, amphora and glass. They are rarely filtered and have used Diam closures since 2019. Reds are generally destemmed and raised in older wood. The signature is precision and restraint. Allen Meadows of Burghound noted the model early on: "Leroux works with vineyards he manages, owns and will also buy fruit (never juice or wine) from growers with who he can work closely." For anyone building a cellar, the village and regional wines here are a masterclass in site expression at sane money.
