Why we follow Domaine Christian Moreau

The estate

The Moreau family has been growing grapes in Chablis since 1814, but the domaine as it exists today began in 2002. That was the year Christian Moreau reclaimed the family's grand cru vineyards, which had long been contracted out to the négociant house that still carried the family name. He rebuilt the estate from the ground up with his son Fabien, who trained in oenology and now leads the winemaking. It is an unusual estate in one important respect: roughly half of what it farms is grand cru. That concentration at the top of the hill is rare in Chablis and it shapes everything about how the wines are made.

The vineyards

The holdings read as a tour of the grand cru slope. There is a substantial parcel of Les Clos, the most prized site of all, alongside Valmur, Vaudésir and Blanchots. Within Les Clos sits the Clos des Hospices, a walled parcel under single ownership and one of very few such enclosures inside a Chablis grand cru. On the premier cru side, Vaillon is the family's stronghold. Six parcels sit within it; five are blended together and the sixth, planted to vines over eighty years old, is bottled separately as Cuvée Guy Moreau.

In the glass

Fabien Moreau works with a light hand. Oak is used as a texturing tool rather than a flavour, and the aim is for it to recede entirely within a few years in bottle. What is left is Chablis in its most classical register: yellow citrus, oyster-shell minerality and a fine tannic frame that gives the wines shape. The grand crus reward patience. Fabien points to his 2009s and 2019s as the benchmark for how these wines age, and they are still improving.
