Why we follow Domaine Coche-Dury

The estate

Jancis Robinson once called Jean-François Coche the King of Meursault, and the title has stuck. He took over in 1973 and married Odile Dury in 1975, giving the estate its name and, over the following four decades, a reputation that puts its village wine in higher demand than most producers' grand crus. His son Raphaël has directed the domaine since 2010, having worked alongside him full-time from 1999. Very little has changed, which is the point.

The vineyards

Around ten hectares, scattered across six communes in small parcels. The single grand cru is Corton-Charlemagne, originally a third of a hectare bought in 1986 and expanded to just under a hectare in 2012. In Meursault there is premier cru Perrières and Caillerets, plus the village lieux-dits Les Rougeots and Chevalières. Reds come from Volnay, Auxey-Duresses, Monthelie and Pommard. One detail tells you most of what you need to know about the philosophy here: no clones have ever been planted. Everything is massale selection, propagated from the domaine's own vines.

In the glass

Barrel fermentation with regular lees stirring, up to twenty-two months in wood, and modest new oak. Yields are naturally low, a function of old vines, tight planting and short pruning. Jean-François's view was that green harvesting is already too late; the work happens earlier. The estate dries its own oak and supplies it to its cooper. Around thirty per cent of the crop still goes to négociants under long-standing contracts, so the domaine bottles only part of an already small production.
