Why we follow Domaine Georges Roumier

The estate

Georges Roumier married Geneviève Quanquin in 1924 and took over her family's vines in Chambolle-Musigny. His son Jean-Marie ran the estate from 1961. His grandson Christophe has led it since 1990, and is widely held to be one of the greatest vignerons alive. Christophe cites Henri Jayer and Jacques d'Angerville as his mentors. His sister Delphine has worked alongside him since 1993.

The vineyards

Twelve hectares across nine appellations, several of them very small indeed. Bonnes-Mares runs to 1.45 hectares spread over four parcels, straddling the two soil types of the cru, the pale Terres Blanches and the red Terres Rouges, which are blended together. The Musigny holding is about a tenth of a hectare, roughly 450 bottles in a good year. Then there is Les Amoureuses: four tenths of a hectare of the most coveted premier cru in Burgundy, around 1,500 bottles. Les Cras adds another 1.76 hectares. In Morey, the family has held the walled 2.5 hectare Clos de la Bussière monopole since 1953; the wall itself was built by Cistercians in the twelfth century. Charmes-Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin are farmed under métayage rather than owned.

In the glass

Organic in practice though not certified, with partial destemming, native yeasts only, gentle three-week fermentations and restrained oak. When a parcel needs replanting Christophe clears it entirely rather than replacing vine by vine, which is why the Amoureuses and Musigny vines are approaching a century old. He considers Musigny the grandest terroir he farms, but finds Bonnes-Mares the more consistent wine. Les Cras is where the value sits.
