Why we follow Domaine Jean-Louis Chave
The estate
One of the oldest continuously family-run domaines in France — the Chave family has grown grapes in the Northern Rhône since 1481. Jean-Louis Chave is the current winemaker, having taken over from his father Gérard. The estate is based in Mauves and is the benchmark for Hermitage.
The vineyards
Around 14.5 to 15 hectares on the hill of Hermitage, roughly 10 of Syrah for the red and 5 of Marsanne and Roussanne for the white, across granite lieux-dits. Les Bessards provides the granite backbone, with Le Méal, L'Hermite, Péléat and Les Beaumes for the red, and Rocoule, Péléat and L'Hermite for the white. Chave's art is the blend across the hill rather than single-parcel bottlings.
In the glass
Traditional vinification and long élevage in a mix of older and some newer oak. The white is a Marsanne-dominant blend with Roussanne. The date 1481 refers to the first documented Chave vineyard holding — more than five centuries of unbroken family winegrowing. Cuvée Cathelin is named for the artist Bernard Cathelin, who designed its label, and is made in tiny quantities only in the greatest years, which is why it commands multiples of the regular Hermitage.

How allocations are offered
It records which producers and wines interest you, so we know who to contact when a release is confirmed.
Availability depends on what arrives and how many customers are waiting. In some years there is very little to go round.
Our team considers purchase history, genuine interest and intended enjoyment. We would rather a case went to someone who will open it and tell us what they thought than to whoever asked first.
Change what you follow at any time from My allocation requests. Release timing moves with the producer and the vintage, so the months on the release calendar are a guide rather than a promise.
