Why we follow Domaine Méo-Camuzet

The estate

The vineyards were assembled by Étienne Camuzet, a politician who helped bring the appellation system into being and who bought the Château du Clos de Vougeot in 1920. For decades afterwards the vines were farmed by sharecroppers, and for around forty years the most important of them was Henri Jayer. When those arrangements ended, Jean-Nicolas Méo took the helm in 1985 and began bottling under the family name, with Jayer as his mentor. Jayer retired in 1988 and advised for some years after. Christian Faurois, son of one of the former métayers, manages the vineyards.

The vineyards

Fourteen hectares. Richebourg is a third of a hectare at the top of the vineyard, immediately alongside Cros Parantoux. Clos de Vougeot, Échezeaux and Corton complete the grand crus. Then there is Cros Parantoux itself, the premier cru Jayer made famous, with Les Brûlées and Les Chaumes nearby and top Nuits-St-Georges premier crus in Murgers and Boudots. A négociant arm, Méo-Camuzet Frère et Sœurs, extends the range.

In the glass

Farmed as organically as possible but deliberately uncertified, so that the team retains flexibility in difficult vintages. Horses work the vineyards and the handwork is meticulous. The winemaking is Jayer's school: cold soak, largely destemmed fruit, and generous but well-judged new oak. The wines are opulent and polished young, with a serious architecture underneath that carries them for decades. Brûlées, Cros Parantoux and Richebourg sit contiguously at the top of the Vosne slope, which makes tasting them side by side one of the most instructive exercises in Burgundy. The Nuits-St-Georges premier crus are Nuits filtered through a Vosne sensibility, and remain an insider's value.
