Why we follow Domaine Ramonet

The estate

Pierre Ramonet arrived in Chassagne-Montrachet in the late 1920s with, as the family tells it, little more than a knapsack. He bought Les Ruchottes in 1934. In 1978 he bought a quarter hectare of Le Montrachet, and the estate's standing was settled. The third generation runs it now: brothers Noël Ramonet in the vines and Jean-Claude Ramonet in the cellar and the office, supported since 2014 by Jean-Claude's daughters Anne-France and Clarisse. The labels have carried Jean-Claude's name since 2013.

The vineyards

Seventeen hectares across Chassagne, Puligny, Saint-Aubin, Bouzeron and Pernand-Vergelesses, running roughly seventy per cent white to thirty per cent red. The grand crus are Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and a small parcel of Chevalier-Montrachet. Seven Chassagne premier crus sit below them, including Les Ruchottes, Morgeot, Caillerets, Clos de la Boudriotte, Clos St-Jean, Chaumées and Vergers.

In the glass

Traditional Chassagne winemaking, barrel-aged with restrained new oak, aiming at purity and longevity rather than immediate impact. Ramonet whites are idiosyncratic in youth and profound with age. Two things are often overlooked. The Chassagne premier crus, Ruchottes and Caillerets especially, carry a good deal of grand cru allure for considerably less money. And the reds, from Clos de la Boudriotte and Clos St-Jean, are serious wines that sommeliers know about and most collectors do not.
