Why we follow Domaine Marquis d'Angerville
The estate
Volnay's reference domaine. Jacques d'Angerville was a pioneer of estate bottling in the mid-twentieth century and fought a long campaign for the integrity of massale selection over commercial clones. His son Guillaume left a career in Paris finance and took over on Jacques's death in 2003. His daughter Margaux joined as the seventh generation in 2024. François Duvivier has been technical director since 2005 and led the conversion to biodynamics, which was completed in 2009.
The vineyards
Sixteen and a half hectares, of which about eleven and a half is Volnay premier cru. The flagship is Clos des Ducs, a walled monopole of 2.15 hectares on marly limestone at the highest point in the village, associated with the family since 1804. Champans is the largest holding at close to four hectares, with Taillepieds, Frémiet, Caillerets, Clos des Angles, Pitures and Les Mitans alongside. The white is a hectare of Meursault premier cru Santenots, from vines planted in 1905.
In the glass
Everything is destemmed, which sets d'Angerville apart from most of its peers. A cold soak of eight to ten days, extraction by gentle pump-over rather than punch-down, and a maximum of twenty per cent new oak across the entire range, Clos des Ducs included. That is among the lightest oak regimes of any leading Côte de Beaune estate, and it is why these wines taste of Volnay rather than of wood. The Wine Advocate, on the 2023 Clos des Ducs, described a wine that "in some respects represents the synthesis of the d'Angerville premiers crus, the finesse and perfume of Caillerets, the layers of Taillepieds and the structure of Champans, united in a whole that's more than the sum of its parts."

How allocations are offered
It records which producers and wines interest you, so we know who to contact when a release is confirmed.
Availability depends on what arrives and how many customers are waiting. In some years there is very little to go round.
Our team considers purchase history, genuine interest and intended enjoyment. We would rather a case went to someone who will open it and tell us what they thought than to whoever asked first.
Change what you follow at any time from My allocation requests. Release timing moves with the producer and the vintage, so the months on the release calendar are a guide rather than a promise.
