The 2022 vintage at Marquis d'Angerville opened with conditions that seemed to echo the heat and intensity of 2020. An early, fast-moving season gave way to a significant June rainstorm that changed the trajectory of the year, providing just enough hydric relief to prevent vine stress and preserve freshness. Harvesting began on 23 August, the same date as in 2003, with fruit described by Guillaume d'Angerville as essentially spotless. Yields recovered strongly from the very short 2021 crop, coming in at 35 to 40 hl/ha, with potential alcohols sitting at a near-perfect 13%. The wines are described as stylistically similar to the 2020s, if slightly richer. The domaine has continued to reduce SO2 use at vinification, now using approximately one-third of what was typical twenty years ago, and biodynamic farming remains central to the approach.

Critic Reviews

96 Points - Charles Curtis MW, Decanter

“This monumental wine is, as always, a reference for the appellation. In 2022, there is a lovely density of plum and blackberry fruit with spice and earth notes. The texture is plump, velvety and long, with supple tannins supporting the wine without adding astringency. D'Angerville destems and gave the grapes a cold soak before fermentation on native yeasts and ageing in cask (mainly used) to preserve the limpid purity of the fruit. Give this wine five years before opening, and it should continue to improve for at least 30 years beyond that. Drink: 2027-2055”
