Why we follow Vietti

The estate

Founded in Castiglione Falletto in 1873 by Carlo Vietti. Luca Currado's father Alfredo Currado married into the family and made the innovations that matter: one of the first commercial single-cru Barolos in 1961, the first single-variety vinification of Arneis in 1967, effectively rescuing the grape, and the artist label series that still distinguishes every bottle. Ownership and leadership have both changed. Vietti was sold in July 2016 to Kyle Krause, the American owner of the Kum & Go convenience store chain, who also owns Enrico Serafino in Piedmont. Luca Currado stayed on as CEO and chief winemaker. Then on 25 January 2023, Currado and his wife Elena Penna resigned, seven vintages after the sale. Currado explained that his role had drifted from vines and wine toward reports and business planning: "It was time to cut the umbilical cord."

The vineyards

Krause's backing funded significant expansion. At his departure Currado put holdings at around 80 hectares across the Langhe, Asti and Colli Tortonesi. Acquisitions include prime MGAs: Roncaglie, Rabajà, Cerequio and Monvigliero. The historic single-vineyard Barolos are Rocche di Castiglione, Brunate, Lazzarito, Ravera and Villero.

In the glass

Every Vietti bottle carries an artist label, a tradition Alfredo Currado began. A cricket motif recurs across the series, and Luca said on leaving that it was the thing he would miss. Currado and Penna have since founded Cascina Penna-Currado at Cascina Lazzarito in Serralunga, a farmhouse built by the Marchesi Falletti in the 1550s. Their first vintage is 2023 and three Barolos debut in 2027.
