Poggio di Sotto is one of the most revered estates in Montalcino, a traditionalist producer from the Castelnuovo dell'Abate side of the hill whose Brunello is aged long in large casks and prized for its perfume, transparency and grace. Brunello di Montalcino is Sangiovese at its most profound, and Poggio di Sotto's version is widely considered a reference point for the appellation, closer in spirit to great Burgundy than to the muscular style of some neighbours.
