2021 Henschke Hill of Roses Shiraz Magnum 1.5L

Critic Reviews
97 Points - Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion
“100% shiraz from 32-year-old vines of one single block at the stellar Hill of Grace vineyard in Eden Valley, matured for 18 months in seasoned French oak. This release sees the 20-year anniversary of this wine and what a cracking vintage to celebrate the milestone. Super bright magenta/crimson in the glass with a distinct sense of clarity and lift to the aromatic profile. Pure satsuma plum, red and dark cherry and some lovely raspberry pip lift with hints of fine spice, mace, star anise, panforte, dark chocolate, violets and earth. A wonderful and enveloping expression of pure dark and black fruits on the palate; graceful, sleek and perfectly poised, set to a backdrop of cascading powdery tannins and a bright mineral cadence. An excellent release.”

“In 1986, a mass selection from the grandfather vines was taken and planted in the Mount Edelstone vineyard. As a result of this, the Henschke's decided to plant to the post office block-right next door to the Hill of Grace vineyard. This was in 1989, and it has given them the opportunity to assess at what point the vines move from young vine to established vines. The most obvious young-vine characteristic, to my palate, is the register of fruit: this 2021 Hill of Roses Shiraz is eminently red-fruited, while the Hill of Grace is black and blue. Another is the tannins, which don't serve to carry the fruit as far through the finish here as they do in the Hill of Grace. Still silty and ultra-fine, they provide pliable structure and chew through the finish. This has notes of pressed garden rose, ozone and wet asphalt. It's a beautiful wine, fresh and vibrant. The vines were 32 years old at the time of the single-pass harvest in 2021. This is excellent. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.”

“Spice-driven aromas complement notes of Damson plums, violets, five spice, mushrooms and earth. The palate is seamless, with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving notes of mulberries, dried herbs, graphite and pepper. It is so pure and refined with an underlying tension. Made from vines planted 32 years ago that were taken from cuttings from the Hill of Grace. Excellent. Drink or hold. Screw cap.”

“The 2021 Shiraz Hill of Roses, made from younger vines off the Hill of Grace vineyard, shows admirable complexity with a lattice of coffee bean, fresh flowers, white pepper, mulberry, blackberry, and dried Italian herbs. Generously proportioned, it retains an ethereal overall feel, while a twist of tannins brings the whole package together nicely. Another strong forward step for this label.”
