MOSS WOOD:
Pinot & Chardonnay Launch with The Mugfords
The variety everyone told them not to plant, and they’ve done it for 50 years.
Pinot Noir was first planted at Moss Wood in 1973, and the inaugural 1977 vintage was released in 1979, making it one of the oldest Pinot Noir vineyards in Western Australia. Every year the same question comes up: why bother with Pinot Noir in Margaret River? In 2019 Pinot made up just 0.4% of the region’s total wine grape crush. Clare Mugford calls it the dark horse of the stable. Customers still remark, “Oh, I didn’t know you make Pinot?”
Three generations have now chased it. Bill and Sandra Pannell were Burgundy buffs from the beginning, the passion was carried on by Clare and Keith, and today it continues with Hugh and Tristan Mugford.
