Why we follow Domaine Dujac

The estate

Jacques Seysses came to Burgundy from a Paris biscuit-manufacturing family, trained under Gérard Potel at Pousse d'Or, and in 1968 bought a run-down four and a half hectare estate in Morey-Saint-Denis. He renamed it Dujac, a contraction of "du Jacques", bottled his first wine in 1969 and had international acclaim within a decade. The domaine is now run by his sons Jeremy and Alec Seysses with Jeremy's wife Diana Snowden Seysses, who also makes wine at Snowden in Napa. That dual-hemisphere perspective has made Dujac unusually thoughtful about how a warming climate changes what the vineyard gives you.

The vineyards

Around seventeen hectares. The heart of it is Morey: just under two hectares of Clos de la Roche across six parcels, and one and a half of Clos Saint-Denis. Beyond that sit Bonnes-Mares, Échezeaux, Charmes-Chambertin, Romanée-St-Vivant and a sliver of Chambertin, with premier crus in Vosne, Gevrey and Chambolle. Puligny-Montrachet Folatières and Combettes, leased from 2014, supply the whites.

In the glass

Dujac helped define what whole-cluster Pinot Noir can be. A high proportion of stems, adjusted vintage by vintage, native yeasts and carefully judged oak produce wines that are perfumed, floral and silky rather than dense. They are transparent to their sites in a way that makes a vertical or a horizontal tasting genuinely instructive. Clos Saint-Denis is the ethereal one, Clos de la Roche the more powerful and mineral of the pair.
