Why we follow Egly-Ouriet
The estate
A benchmark grower in Ambonnay, in the Montagne de Reims, founded in the 1930s. Francis Egly took over in the early 1980s and shifted to entirely estate bottling, driving the house to cult status; his son Charles Egly is now involved. Egly is considered, with Selosse, a doyen of grower Champagne.
The vineyards
Around 12 hectares at its core. Roughly 10 are Grand Cru — some 8 in Ambonnay, plus Bouzy and Verzenay — planted about 70 per cent Pinot Noir to 30 per cent Chardonnay, with a further 2 hectares of Pinot Meunier in Premier Cru Vrigny. South and southeast-facing clay-limestone. The old Les Crayères parcel, planted in 1946 and 1947, includes ungrafted vines.
In the glass
Low yields, lees ageing well beyond Champagne norms, fermentation in stainless steel and oak barrels of one to five years, typically no malolactic, and Coquard presses installed in 2008. Disgorgement dates appear on the labels. Francis Egly has described his Les Crayères Blanc de Noirs as like a Montrachet with bubbles. The combination of power and precision in the Pinot is often said to rival the grandes marques' prestige cuvées.

How allocations are offered
It records which producers and wines interest you, so we know who to contact when a release is confirmed.
Availability depends on what arrives and how many customers are waiting. In some years there is very little to go round.
Our team considers purchase history, genuine interest and intended enjoyment. We would rather a case went to someone who will open it and tell us what they thought than to whoever asked first.
Change what you follow at any time from My allocation requests. Release timing moves with the producer and the vintage, so the months on the release calendar are a guide rather than a promise.
