96 Points - Jeremy Oliver, Oliver's Wines
Expressive, bloody and powerfully varietal, it unfolds an earthy, spicy bouquet of redcurrants, blood plums and smoky, cedary oak backed by ferrous and charcuterie-like notes plus a whiff of paprika. Medium to fullish in weight, it’s long and controlled, with a handsomely oaked and fiery core of redcurrants, red cherries and blood plums framed by firmish, drying tannins and finishing with a measured and savoury seamlessness.

96 Points - Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion
Barossa Valley mataro from 100+ year-old vines. Incredible tannin structure. Ultrafine, but with grain and assertion. The tannin doesn’t hold the wine up, if anything it simply enables it, this despite the fact that the fruit is both mid-weight and measured. This is a fantastic wine. Complex, rigid and lengthy.

From the Producer:
The Kleinig clone of Mataro is locally known as the great original Mataro clone brought over from Europe two centuries ago. Many of the renowned Mataro vineyards throughout the Barossa have been planted from cuttings of this original clone, as was our old vine Mataro vineyard in Greenock.

Greenock is an ideal sub-region for producing Mataro wines. The combination of its red clay and ironstone outcrops as well as highly alkaline calcareous subsoils allow for great intensity of flavours, while maintaining high natural acidity and vibrancy and a strong backbone of mouth-puckering tannins that Mataro is known for.

In this wine we draw inspiration from the great wines of Bandol in South-Western France, in which the greatest wines are produced solely from Mataro. The wines are wild, gamey and spicey. While having great intensity of flavours, the palate maintains its freshness with high natural acid and assertive tannins.

Ground Indian spices, cloves and game meats are underlaid by red and black berry fruits with notes of cedar spice and cinnamon.

The palate shows rich red to dark fruits, cured meats and great vibrancy and freshness. The powerful, mouth-puckering tannins carry the wine through to the finish.
