Average Critic Score: 96.67/100 based on 3 critic reviews

From the granite slopes of Bessards, the heart of the hill of Hermitage, Le Pavillon is M. Chapoutier's most profound Syrah and one of the reference wines of the northern Rhone. The 2018 M. Chapoutier Le Pavillon Ermitage is a plusher, more generous expression than some vintages, with velvety tannins and layers of blueberry and black olive. Joe Czerwinski (Wine Advocate) rated it 96-98 points from barrel, expecting it to drink well for two decades, while Josh Raynolds (Vinous) and Wine Spectator each awarded 96 points.

A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and incense, with cured tobacco and potpourri notes in the background. Shows impressive depth as well as vivacity in its lush blueberry, cherry-vanilla, mocha and fruitcake flavors... finishes on a youthfully tannic note, with reverberating spice and floral notes and strong persistence. - Josh Raynolds, Vinous (96 pts)

Suggested drinking window: 2023 - 2038 (Wine Spectator).

Critic Reviews

98 Points - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

“The 2018 Ermitage le Pavillon is a plush, full-bodied beauty that combines fruity notes of blueberries with savory notes of black olives and marries them together with rich, earthy notes. Almost creamy across the mid-palate, it finishes with soft waves of velvety tannins. I expect this will firm up a bit prior to bottling, then drink well for two decades. (96-98 pts)”

96 Points - Josh Raynolds, Vinous

“Saturated ruby color. A hugely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruits, licorice, exotic spices and incense, with cured tobacco and potpourri notes in the background. Shows impressive depth as well as vivacity in its lush blueberry, cherry-vanilla, mocha and fruitcake flavors, which display outstanding definition and back-end lift. Tightens up through the back half and finishes on a youthfully tannic note, with reverberating spice and floral notes and strong persistence. Made from de-stemmed fruit and aged in 20% new oak barrels.”

96 Points - Wine Spectator

“This is packed with dark currant, fig and blackberry paste flavors, carried by a sleek, racy structure that is nicely embedded from start to finish. Light red tea, dried anise and warm earth accents peek in throughout. Ends with a long, well-buried mineral note. Best from 2023 through 2038. 48 cases imported.”
