Average Critic Score: 93.5/100 based on 4 critic reviews

In magnum, the 2020 Marchesi di Gresy Barbaresco Martinenga is a wine for the long game: large formats age more slowly and reward patience. Martinenga is the family's monopole amphitheatre in the heart of Barbaresco and one of the appellation's classic wines, as Monica Larner (Wine Advocate) put it in awarding 94 points. Andrii Stetsiuk (James Suckling) also gave 94 points, calling it exquisite, while Antonio Galloni (Vinous) and Wine Spectator each scored it 93 points. Perfumed, silky and mid-weight, it is Barbaresco of real grace.

Extremely perfumed and pleasant on the nose with hibiscus, cherry blossom, orange peel and watermelon aromas that follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins with such lovely length. Beautiful. Very silky and fine. Exquisite. - Andrii Stetsiuk, James Suckling (94 pts)

Suggested drinking window: 2026 - 2043 (Wine Spectator).

Critic Reviews

94 Points - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

“One of the appellation's classic wines, the Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy 2020 Barbaresco Martinenga delivers a soft entry to the palate with subtle cherry and sweet raspberry. Those fruit tones are laced with dusty mineral and white licorice. The wine delivers medium-weight texture, but the finish remains long and polished over time. The tannins will soften with a few more years of bottle age. This is a production of 24,047 bottles hitting the market in fall 2023.”

94 Points - Andrii Stetsiuk, James Suckling

“Extremely perfumed and pleasant on the nose with hibiscus, cherry blossom, orange peel and watermelon aromas that follow through to a medium body with very fine tannins with such lovely length. Beautiful. Very silky and fine. Exquisite. Drinkable but much better in three or four years.”

93 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

“The 2020 Barbaresco Martinenga is superb. Bright, rich and expansive, the 2020 impresses with its energy and cut. Red-toned fruit, blood orange, rose petal and cinnamon are all beautifully delineated. This gracious, mid-weight Barbaresco delivers the goods. The 2020 spent a year in barrel, 30% new, and another year in cask. This is an especially fine edition for the Martinenga.”

93 Points - Wine Spectator

“Offering cherry and strawberry fruit shaded by hay, eucalyptus, green tea and mineral notes, this broad, juicy and racy red tightens up, leaving a compact finish today. Needs time to open. Best from 2026 through 2043. 2,000 cases made, 600 cases imported.”
