Clos de la Barre is the 2.12-hectare walled monopole that surrounds the Lafon family house and cellars, built in 1869. Shallow clay over a hard limestone substrate, east-facing and all but flat, with plantings running back to 1950. The thin topsoil restricts yields naturally and pushes the roots down into the rock.
Although 2023 generally lacked acidity, here we have all the tension we want, says Pierre Lafon. There were ripe apple fruit aromas and lush floral notes, and also noticeable depth and hints of smoke and mineral. Vinified in older wood this vintage, mostly demi-muids, and bottled at 13% alcohol. Neal Martin added up to 91 points at Vinous and Matthew Hayes 16.5/20 for JancisRobinson.com. Christy Canterbury MW named the domaine one of her top ten Cote de Beaune white wine producers of 2023.

Tasted out of barrel but assembled to resemble the final blend, one could see his reasoning - although there were ripe apple fruit aromas and lush floral notes, there was also noticeable depth and hints of smoke and mineral. An absolute beauty on the palate, with a crisper finish, though the honeysuckle continues on through. This is balanced by fresh lemon, as Clos de la Barre benefits from a lower pH (higher acidity). “Outstanding Top Value. There is a refreshing lemon lime character to the petrol-inflected Granny Smith apple aromas that are trimmed in enough wood to merit pointing out. There is slightly more volume still to the rich, fleshy and sappy medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent mid-palate density before concluding in a surprisingly powerful finish that is just a bit more persistent.
