Why we follow Domaine Denis Mortet

The estate

Charles Mortet founded the family estate in Gevrey-Chambertin in 1956 and divided it between his two sons in the early 1990s. Denis Mortet took four and a half hectares, was a close friend of Henri Jayer, and built a reputation through that decade for concentrated, opulent Pinot Noir. Denis died in January 2006. His son Arnaud, then in his mid-twenties, took over with his mother Laurence and sister Clémence, and has since become one of the most respected growers on the Côte.

The vineyards

Around sixteen hectares, the great majority in Gevrey. Grand cru holdings are small and precise: a fifth of a hectare of Chambertin bought in 1999, a third of Clos de Vougeot, plus Charmes-Chambertin, and Bonnes-Mares and Mazis-Chambertin added around 2014. Premier cru Lavaux St-Jacques sits alongside village parcels in En Motrot, Au Vellé and En Champs, with further vines in Chambolle, Vougeot and Marsannay. No herbicides or chemical fertilisers have been used since 1996, and the premier and grand crus are ploughed by horse.

In the glass

Arnaud has moved the style away from his father's. New oak has been reduced substantially, extraction is gentler, macerations shorter, and some cuvées now see whole bunches with the main stem removed. The wines have become more chiselled without losing depth, and the reference point critics reach for is his uncle by marriage, Charles Rousseau. The village Gevrey bottlings are where to start: precise, ageworthy and made with the same rigour as everything above them.
