First produced in 1988, Nine Popes is regarded as the wine that kick started the Grenache revival in Australia in the late 1980's / 1990's

Inspired by the classic 'GSM' blends of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape, it stands as a beacon of quality amongst other great 'GSM' blends and is a classic example of quality dry grown, old vines in the Barossa Valley.

“Charlie Melton, one of the Barossa Valley's great characters, with wife Virginia by his side, makes some of the most eagerly sought after à la mode wines’ in Australia.”
James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

91+ Points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast
Fragrant and floral with raspberry, musk, spice, vanilla bean and some more ferrous bloody smells lurking in the background. On the palate medium to full bodied with juicy raspberry, blueberry, iron and floral flavours. It has firm slightly hard acidity and light but equally firm tannin. Finishes with modest length. Fresh and obviously youthful, this is a wine of considerable potential that needs time to fill out and soften.

Critic Reviews

92 Points - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Enthusiast

“Shows the wonderfully silky side of Grenache—the main part of the blend—in its diaphanous, delicate texture that manages to be soft but not too soft, beautifully framing flavors of cherries, spice and cola. Long on the finish, trailing away slowly and elegantly. Drink now–2015. ”

92 Points - Josh Reynolds, Vinous

“(50% grenache, 45% syrah and 5% mourvedre) Dark red. Sexy bouquet of raspberry, blackberry, smoked meat, fresh flowers and pungent herbs. Deep red berry flavors offer excellent palate-coating intensity and admirable clarity, gaining sweetness on the back end. There's a pinot-like silkiness to this already tasty wine. Raspberry echoes on the long finish.”

92 Points - James Halliday, Wine Companion

“Plush raspberry fruits and the autosuggestion of Provencale garrigue on the bouquet; loaded with sweet fruit and framed by well-handled oak, structure for a long life ahead.”
