Batard-Montrachet is the summit of the range and one of the great white grand crus of Burgundy, a powerful, broad-shouldered wine shared between Chassagne and Puligny along the foot of the slope. Morey's is built for the long haul: grilled almond and white flower, deep white-fruit weight, a saline thread, and a finish that seems to go on without end. Compact and a little closed in youth, it asks for patience and rewards it fully.

Morey-Coffinet (Chassagne-Montrachet)
Run by Thibault Morey, widely called the rising star of Chassagne, farming organically since 2018. Holdings include Bâtard-Montrachet and top premier crus; precise, mineral whites and silky reds.

Critic Reviews

96 Points - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

“Mid lemon yellow. Grilled almonds Marjolaine suggests, and I agree. Once more the flesh and the oak on the nose are apparent. All the requisite weight and white fruit, silky length, a little salinity, understated but very long indeed. Rather hidden at the moment. Original score: 93-96 points”

95 Points - Allen Meadows, Burghound

“Here too there is touch of honeysuckle on the elegant white flower, orchard fruit, spice and crushed fennel aromas. There is more size and weight to the rich and generous, though not quite so much as that of the Pucelles, on the notably more powerful, youthfully austere and hugely long finish. This is also impeccably well-balanced though I underscore that it's very compact and clearly a Batard built for the longer haul. This too is excellent. (Drink starting 2033)”

93 Points - Neal Martin, Vinous

“The 2023 Batard-Montrachet Grand Cru, from vines planted in 1996, had quite a bit of that matchstick reduction on the nose when I tasted it from barrel, but you can discern the concentration here. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed opening. Acidity counters its richness as hints of ginger and white pepper emerge toward the finish. Powerful compared to its peers, this Grand Cru will require two or three years in bottle. (Drink between 2027-2045) Original score: 91-93 points”
