Why we follow Taittinger Comtes de Champagne
The estate
The prestige Blanc de Blancs of family-owned Taittinger in Reims, reacquired by the family in 2006 after a brief period of private-equity ownership. Led by Pierre-Emmanuel Taittinger and now by Vitalie Taittinger, President since 2020, with Clovis Taittinger. The wine is named for Thibaud IV, Count of Champagne.
The vineyards
Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs is entirely Chardonnay, drawn exclusively from the Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs — Avize, Chouilly, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. Taittinger is a large house combining substantial estate holdings with purchased fruit.
In the glass
A small proportion of the Blanc de Blancs, around five per cent, is aged in oak barrels, and the wine sees roughly ten years on lees before release. There is also a Pinot Noir-based Comtes de Champagne Rosé. Comtes is one of the great-value prestige Blanc de Blancs relative to its peers. The Crusader story attached to Thibaud IV is a genuine talking point, though the accompanying vine-origin legend is folklore.
