Before it took the Abercrombie name in 2005, Howard Park's flagship red was the Howard Park Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot, crafted by John Wade from fruit grown across the Great Southern and Margaret River. The 1996 earned 96 points from Huon Hooke, who found it remarkably fresh and youthful, and 93 points from James Halliday, who called it a welcome return to form.

“Medium red, with some softening in the purple hue. The bouquet is fragrant and complex, with that typical spicy/cedary oak of Howard Park; the palate has admirable structure with cedary, foresty flavours, soft, fine tannins, and sweetness deriving partly from the fruit and partly from the Troncais oak. A welcome return to form.”
