Average Critic Score: 88.0/100 based on 3 critic reviews

Moss Wood planted its first vines at Wilyabrup in 1969 and has been the reference point for Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon ever since, with a house style built on supple texture rather than brute power. The 1997 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is a mature example of that approach, now fully in its secondary phase with savoury, earthy complexity wrapped around its blackberry core. Robert M. Parker, Jr. (Wine Advocate) rated it 89 points, James Halliday (Halliday Wine Companion) 88 points and Stephen Tanzer (Vinous) 87 points.

The bouquet is complex, with savoury/earthy aromas definitely in the secondary phase. The palate is complex and rich, with a mix of savoury/briary/foresty characters running through blackberries, chocolate and vanilla. - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion (88 pts)

A fully mature Moss Wood to open now, decanted briefly and served with a roast.

Critic Reviews

89 Points - Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate

“This is a beautifully elegant offering.”

88 Points - James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion

“Medium red, with some purple hues, showing development. The bouquet is complex, with savoury/earthy aromas definitely in the secondary phase. The palate is complex and rich, with a mix of savoury/briary/foresty characters running through blackberries, chocolate and vanilla.”

87 Points - Stephen Tanzer, Vinous

“Ruby-red. Cherry, currant, cough syrup and spicecake on the nose, plus a hint of dried herbs. Dense and supple, with green-edged cherry/berry and chewing tobacco flavors of moderate complexity. Finishes with slightly drying but rather easy tannins.”
