Producer Tasting Notes:
The 2001 Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon is arguably the greatest wine yet released from the vineyard. It has a fragrant nose of mulberries, blackberries and violets with a touch of earth and some spicy, cedary notes while the palate is deep, densely flavoured with ripe cassis and mulberry, complexed by chocolate and coffee bean characters. This is a profound, powerful red, opulent and concentrated with impressive weight showing fine, ripe tannins on a long, lingering finish. The oak and densely packed fruit are seamlessly integrated.
Cellaring: This wine is built for the long haul and, if well cellared, will improve over the next ten years and remain at its peak long after that.
96 Points and Top 100 - James Halliday, The Weekend Australian
There is no doubt the 2001 vintage in Margaret River was outstanding, as even the normal hard to please Keith Mugford is happy to admit. Spotlessly clean this is a gorgeous, silky wine flooded with redcurrant, cassis and blackcurrant fruit in a web of fine tannins. Elegance personified and screwcap guarantees a very long life.
96 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
Cabernet is King as we all know..and king of Australian cabernet sauvignon is probably Moss Wood. We bought a dozen of these about 2 years ago..and I like to check up on these things. The screwcap closure is working very well here. The wine is developing as I would expect a cork closed bottle but (obviously) showing no taint and no reduction whatsoever.
Beautiful smelling cabernet with aromas of blackcurrant, mulberry, beef stock, cedar oak and with time some licorice characters emerging. On the palate the fruit is deep and rich but not fruity or overly chocolaty (for a wine of this alcohol) – just concentrated and beautifully ripe with mulberry/blackcurrant and more earthy leafy flavours. Lots of fine grained ripe tannin and good freshness with a fairly tannic blackcurranty finish. This wine has settled down very well over the last two years and is looking much more savoury with earthy beefy flavours coming to the fore. Super wine.
