The 2023 Tête de Cuvée Pinot Noir is structural and spicy, the impact of oak here more pronounced than in the estate wine. It shows the tremendous structure inherent in the grape tannins, which I admire, and the fruit has a different character—less of the strawberry fields and more dark fruit characters. It has tapenade, clove, star anise and shaved fennel alongside peat and black cherry. This is silky, seamless and very good indeed. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

From Picardy:
The first wine produced at Picardy was the 1996 Pinot Noir. Picardy Pinots exhibit finesse and complexity, inspired by the great Pinot Noir wines of the old world.

Excellent fruit intensity, structure, pH to acid relationship and fine-grained tannins guarantee long life and excellent bottle development. The wines are also very approachable in their early years.

Since the first vintage in 1996, an increase in new clonal plantings and an advance in vine age has resulted in wines of greater texture, structure and complexity. Picardy Pinot Noir consists of 11 clones: upright, droopy (existing clones in Australia) and clones 114, 115 and 777 (which are special selections from the University of Dijon) as well as 6 new clones imported from Burgundy. It took 21 years - from the time Bill supervised the sourcing of these clones - until the last one was finally delivered to Picardy from quarantine in 2011.

“A blend of clones and largely sourced from 0.1 hectare high density block. I fell in love with the wines of Picardy with their estate Pinot Noir and that love solidified when I first tasted the Tête De Cuvée many moons ago. I remember the moment vividly because I swooned like a teenager meeting her idol. Weak knees, blushed cheeks and at a loss for words. Today this wine still has that impact on me, except I’ve found my voice these days. Bilberries, Bing cherries at the peak of the season. Fresh juniper, allspice and star anise. Bleeding pomegranate seeds, blackberry leaf and sage. It has the density of Obsidian and the staying power of it too. The flavour continues on and on. A Heliotrope of vanilla like scents with potting soil, granite and raw cocoa. Tannins are silky and the wine’s final tones are amplified by its svelte frame. Drink now and savour for many new moons to come, 6-8 years onwards. This would be a dream beside artisan made Morcilla sausage.”
